The Interim Chief Executive –

 

(a)       read the Notice convening the Annual Meeting of the Council;

 

(b)       reported that apologies for absence had been received from Councillors Bryan Apsley, Paul Blackwell, Mike Davies, Alan Edwards, Kevin Hughes, R Alun Jenkins, Adrienne Jeorrett, Marc Jones, David Kelly, Geoff Lowe, Paul Roberts, Rondo Roberts, Graham Rogers, Nigel Williams and Phil Wynn.

Election of Mayor

To elect the Mayor of the County Borough for the ensuing year.

It was moved by Councillor Mark Pritchard, seconded by Councillor David Griffiths and unanimously –

 

RESOLVED – That Councillor Andy Williams be elected Mayor of the County Borough for the ensuing year.

Appointment of Deputy Mayor

To appoint a Deputy Mayor of the County Borough Council for the ensuing year.

It was moved by Councillor Andrew Atkinson, seconded by Councillor John Phillips and unanimously – 

 

RESOLVED – That Councillor Robert Walsh be appointed Deputy Mayor of the County Borough for the ensuing year.

Declarations of Acceptance of Office

In accordance with Section 83 of the Local Government Act (as amended), Councillor Andy Williams duly made a Declaration of Acceptance of the Office of Mayor of the County Borough.

 

In accordance with Section 83 of the Local Government Act (as amended), Councillor Robert Walsh duly made a Declaration of Acceptance of the Office of Deputy Mayor of the County Borough.

The newly elected Mayor thanked Councillors Mark Pritchard and D J Griffiths for proposing and seconding his nomination and to his fellow Members for their support.  He also expressed thanks to the Interim Chief Executive, the Mayoral staff and other staff for their advice and assistance during his term as Deputy Mayor and to Reverend Dr Jason Bray, for accepting the post of Mayor’s Chaplain for the forthcoming year.   He said that it was a great honour and privilege to be elected Mayor of the County Borough and conveyed his congratulations to the retiring Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor John Prichard and Mrs Ann Pritchard, on a most successful two consecutive years of office and wished them well for the future.

 

The Mayor stated that he had enjoyed his year as Deputy Mayor and was looking forward to his year in office.  He announced that his designated charities for the year would be Katie Piper Trust, Nightingale House Hospice, and Wales Air Ambulance.  In conclusion, he thanked his wife, Beverley, for agreeing to undertake the role of Mayoress for the forthcoming year, Brymbo Male Voice Choir for their musical contribution at today’s ceremony and his family, friends and the many invited guests whose presence had helped make the occasion such a special one.

 

In addressing the Council, the Deputy Mayor offered his congratulations to the newly elected Mayor and Mayoress and thanked Councillors Andrew Atkinson and John Phillips for proposing and seconding his nomination respectively.  He stated that he was extremely honoured to be elected Deputy Mayor of Wrexham County Borough Council and welcomed the opportunity to support the Mayor and Mayoress and to promote the Council and County Borough in the year ahead.  He congratulated the retiring Mayor and Mayoress on their outstanding work during their period of office.  In conclusion, he thanked Sharon Pope for agreeing to undertake the role of Deputy Mayoress, his family, friends and fellow Members for their support.

The Mayor called upon Councillors David A Bithell and Joan Lowe to propose and second, respectively, a vote of thanks to the retired Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor John Pritchard and Mrs Ann Pritchard.

 

On behalf of the Council, Councillor David A Bithell thanked the retired Mayor and Mayoress for their total commitment and for being excellent ambassadors for Wrexham during their two years of office, wishing them  well for the future.

 

In response, the retired Mayor thanked Councillors David A Bithell and Joan Lowe for their kind remarks, fellow Councillors for their support and congratulated the newly elected Mayor and Mayoress on their appointments. 

 

During his term of office he and the Mayoress had met with a wide range of people throughout the County Borough and beyond.  Particular highlights included the many visits to the Guildhall by children involved in the Schools Councils: the illuminated poppy display at the Guildhall and the meeting with veterans to formally launch of the Poppy Appeal in North Wales and attending the Royal Garden Party and meeting with Prince Charles.  He acknowledged the wide range of work undertaken by the many voluntary organisations within the County Borough.  Finally, he expressed special thanks to his wife for undertaking the role of Deputy Mayoress and for her support during his term of office.

At the conclusion of the Mayor Making Ceremony, the Mayor invited everyone to join him for refreshments in the Committee Rooms and it was therefore –
