(a)        read the Notice convening the Annual Meeting of the Council;

 

(b)        reported that apologies for absence had been received from Councillors William Baldwin, Trevor Bates, Paul Blackwell, Krista Childs, Mike Davies, Michael Dixon, R Alun Jenkins, Hugh Jones, Geoff Lowe, Paul Roberts and Rondo Roberts.

Election of Mayor

To elect the Mayor of the County Borough for the ensuing year

It was moved by Councillor Phil Wynn, seconded by Councillor Bryan Apsley and unanimously –

 

RESOLVED – That Councillor Robert Walsh be elected Mayor of the County Borough for the ensuing year.

 

3.

Appointment of Deputy Mayor

To appoint a Deputy Mayor of the County Borough Council for the ensuing year.

It was moved by Councillor John Pritchard, seconded by Councillor Alan Edwards and unanimously – 

 

RESOLVED – That Councillor Ronnie Prince be appointed Deputy Mayor of the County Borough for the ensuing year.

 

4.

Declarations of Acceptance of Office

In accordance with Section 83 of the Local Government Act (as amended), Councillor Robert Walsh duly made a Declaration of Acceptance of the Office of Mayor of the County Borough.

 

In accordance with Section 83 of the Local Government Act (as amended), Councillor Ronnie Prince duly made a Declaration of Acceptance of the Office of Deputy Mayor of the County Borough.

The newly elected Mayor stated that it was a great honour and privilege to be elected Mayor of the County Borough and conveyed his congratulations to the retiring Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Andy Williams and Mrs Bev Williams, on a very successful term of office and wished them well for the future.  He thanked Councillors Phil Wynn and Bryan Apsley for proposing and seconding his nomination and to his fellow Members for their support.  He also expressed his thanks to the Chief Executive, the Mayoral staff and other staff for their assistance and support

 

The Mayor announced that is designated charities for the year would be the HACK Horse Sanctuary, Bowel Cancer UK and SANDS – Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity. In conclusion he thanked his consort, Ms Sharon Pope for agreeing to undertake the role of Mayoress for the forthcoming year and St Christopher’s School choir for their musical contribution to today’s ceremony.

 

In addressing the Council, the Deputy Mayor offered his congratulations to the newly elected Mayor and Mayoress and thanked Councillors John Pritchard and T Alan Edwards for proposing and seconding his nomination.  He stated that he was extremely honoured to be elected Deputy Mayor of Wrexham County Borough and welcomed the opportunity to support the Mayor and Mayoress to promote the Council and County Borough in the forthcoming year.  In conclusion he thanked Miss Sunanda Kapas for agreeing to undertake the role of Deputy Mayoress for the coming year.

Vote of Thanks

The Mayor called upon Councillors Mark Pritchard and Gwenfair Jones to propose and second, respectively, a vote of thanks to the retired Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Andy Williams and Mrs Bev Williams.

 

On behalf of the Council, Councillor Mark Pritchard thanked the retired Mayor and Mayoress for their commitment and for being excellent ambassadors for Wrexham during their term of office, wishing them well for the future. 

 

In response, the retired Mayor thanked Councillors Mark Pritchard and Gwenfair Jones for their kind remarks, fellow Councillors and Mayoral staff for their support, and congratulated the newly elected Mayor and Mayoress on their appointments. 

 

He stated that during his term of office he and the Mayoress had met with a wide range of people during their official visits throughout the County Borough and beyond.  Every engagement had been special and he felt particularly honoured to have signed the Freedom Book for the RAF in Wales on behalf of the Council, to have attended several World War One Commemoration events, to have received a High Sheriff Award and to have been Mayor during the 70th anniversary year of the NHS.

 

He acknowledged the wide range of work undertaken by the many voluntary organisations within the County Borough.  Finally, he expressed special thanks to his wife for undertaking the role of Mayoress and to his son for his support during his term of office.

At the conclusion of the Mayor Making Ceremony, the Mayor invited everyone to join him for refreshments in the Committee Rooms and it was therefore –
